LIVING FOR GOD (TM)
"Too Many Words"
By Calvin and Lisa Wulf
"Give ear and come to me; hear me, that your soul may live." Isaiah 55:3 (NIV)
He clicks his remote through the channels:
Just Do It
Have It Your Way
Obey Your Thirst
I am the Bread of Life
They're Great!
Be all that You can Be
Got Milk?
He clicks off the remote. "This stuff is tiresome. It's all the same."
Too many words! Every day were bombarded with a constant clamor of messages. So many sound-bites stream through the cable that we can hardly keep track of them. Racing words crash together like waves on a rock. Our senses are deadened. We cant absorb it all.
The media has us by the throat. Hundreds of thousands of entities are vying for our attention and each one puts out a carefully crafted message. That means overkill is inevitable. Nothing grabs our attention. When our media blender finally stops whirring, we're left with a bland sameness. Then what is truth?
In our media saturated world, all messages seem equally important. Eternal truths are on a par with triviality. So consider these questions. Is the word of God drowning in a sea of competing slogans? Have we reduced the Gospel of Christ to the level of a box of cereal?
With so many words, even important messages are lost or devalued. Suddenly "God loves you" equals "Eat Wheaties." Christ's truth has become just another consumer choice. It's time to stop the word distractions and focus on the true Word.
Can't hear God's voice over the racket? Plug into the Holy Spirit cable and tune in these suggestions:
· Be discerning. Sort out the important messages from the trivia.
· Turn down the noise. Learn to enjoy the sound of silence.
· Ignore the media hype. Download some real audio from God.
The Lord has more to say than a talking stapler. And he serves something better than fast food. Actually, Jesus is the ultimate consumer item. Whoever eats his bread will live forever. So push the media clutter aside and free up your mind. Put your focus on the real message.
